When Leica designed the M8, many of the traditional features of the original Leica film camera were retained, including loading film by first removing the bottom cover (“baseplate.”) To insert a memory card into the Leica M8, one must similarly completely remove the baseplate. Some reviewers called this ‘eccentric.’ Others called it ‘awkward.’
M-Mate (1)

While the design decision is open to debate, there is no doubt that changing SD cards on the M8 takes more effort, and creates a bit of a juggling act as compared to swapping cards on other digital cameras.

Not so with the M-Mate! Swapping memory cards is now a snap.

With the M-Mate, it is much faster to take a few shots, remove the memory card, and then transfer the files to your computer. No more dropping or misplacing the original baseplate. No more inserting the SD card but forgetting to put the baseplate back on. No more accidental “Attention: Bottom cover removed” warnings!

The M-Mate is machined from a single piece of tempered aluminum/magnesium alloy. This provides greater strength and rigidity than the original brass baseplate, while providing a solid base for the tripod socket.
